See, when you come here,
You start like everyone else,
A voice ‘mongst millions,
Not entirely sure
With the somewhat absurd
Assumption that you just might be heard.
Maybe you have fantastic visions
Of your place
In this space.
Or maybe your reason for being here
Is not all that clear.
No matter your reason, your intentions
Are the same: A passion to
Connect and create and
To build your own name
Cause really for all of us,
Isn’t that the aim?
To communicate and inspire,
No matter how selfish and vain
Some may consider the gain?
See, to be successful on this turf,
Two traits are required:
A combination of luck
And a deep burning desire.
You see, no one gets anywhere
Without the good will of others:
A kinship, a community,
A band of sisters and brothers.
We rely on You
To give us our start
And once that is done,
It’s our turn to play part.
You see, no one gets anywhere
Without hard work and dedication;
A fact that is often missed
By these pessimists of degradation.
You see, this is a holy campus
It is a democracy
Laughing in the face of
Ignorance’s monopoly
They think we won this like
Some sort of lottery
And as a result, they talk about us
With an air of mockery
But don’t you for a second
Imagine that as students, we
Are complacent
About how lucky we are to
Be in this situation.
Having said that, let me make clear
that there are certain individuals
That simply do not belong here.
See, for some, a level of influence
Seems to lead to an
Inexcusable breed of ignorance.
But please believe me when I say,
Their names will quickly fade away.
See, the companions that I admire,
Are those that have the true desire
To push and climb another level higher,
Those who break the glass ceilings,
Still helping out the weaklings.
Please don’t think for a second
That they have forgotten their roots:
Those initial allies that supported their pursuits.
You see, as a pupil, I am
Indebted, I am humbled.
But please bear with me while
I haphazardly stumble
Because whilst it looks like I
Understand what I do,
I must confess I haven’t a clue.
As this colony expands and evolves,
Intellectuals appear and dissolve.
Trends will come and go
While this campus still will grow
But one thing remains the same
And will continue to do so;
The reason this school grew
All those years ago,
Is in the heart and it won’t go away.
The reason why I’m able to do
What I love today
Is You, Dear Culver.
My salutation is late.
But magnificent Culver.
Look at my state!
You had me Harkness and debate
I had to work and wait
I put effort in and I had to concentrate
To reach that goal I supremely anticipate
But glorious Culver,
Soon I will be done with that wait.
When it comes to my turn, I will not hesitate
You helped me step by step and
Soon, but not yet, I’ll stride through that gate
